Hyperbolic conservation laws on spacetimes. A finite volume scheme based on differential forms

چکیده
We consider nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws, posed on a differential (n + 1)-manifold with boundary referred to as a spacetime, and in which the “flux” is defined as a flux field of n-forms depending on a parameter (the unknown variable). We introduce a formulation of the initial and boundary value problem which is geometric in nature and is more natural than the vector field approach recently developed for Riemannian manifolds. Our main assumption on the manifold and the flux field is a global hyperbolicity condition, which provides a global time-orientation as is standard in Lorentzian geometry and general relativity. Assuming that the manifold admits a foliation by compact slices, we establish the existence of a semi-group of entropy solutions. Moreover, given any two hypersurfaces with one lying in the future of the other, we establish a “contraction” property which compares two entropy solutions, in a (geometrically natural) distance equivalent to the L distance. To carry out the proofs, we rely on a new version of the finite volume method, which only requires the knowledge of the given n-volume form structure on the (n + 1)-manifold and involves the total flux across faces of the elements of the triangulations, only, rather than the product of a numerical flux times the measure of that face.

A new total variation diminishing implicit nonstandard finite difference scheme for conservation laws
In this paper, a new implicit nonstandard finite difference scheme for conservation laws, which preserving the property of TVD (total variation diminishing) of the solution, is proposed. This scheme is derived by using nonlocal approximation for nonlinear terms of partial differential equation. Schemes preserving the essential physical property of TVD are of great importance in practice. Such s...
متن کاملA total variation diminishing high resolution scheme for nonlinear conservation laws
In this paper we propose a novel high resolution scheme for scalar nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws. The aim of high resolution schemes is to provide at least second order accuracy in smooth regions and produce sharp solutions near the discontinuities. We prove that the proposed scheme that is derived by utilizing an appropriate flux limiter is nonlinear stable in the sense of total varia...

Abstract. The nonoscillatory central difference scheme of Nessyahu and Tadmor is a Godunovtype scheme for one-dimensional hyperbolic conservation laws in which the resolution of Riemann problems at the cell interfaces is bypassed thanks to the use of the staggered Lax–Friedrichs scheme. Piecewise linear MUSCL-type (monotonic upstream-centered scheme for conservation laws) cell interpolants and ...
متن کاملStabilisation of hyperbolic conservation laws using conservative finite–volume schemes
We discuss numerical stabilisation of dynamics governed by nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws through feedback boundary conditions. Using a discrete Lyapunov function we prove exponential decay of the discrete solution to first– order finite volume schemes in conservative form. Decay rates are established for a large class of finite volume schemes including the Lax–Friedrichs scheme. Theore...
متن کاملAn Assessment of Semi-Discrete Central Schemes for Hyperbolic Conservation Laws
High-resolution finite volume methods for solving systems of conservation laws have been widely embraced in research areas ranging from astrophysics to geophysics and aero-thermodynamics. These methods are typically at least second-order accurate in space and time, deliver non-oscillatory solutions in the presence of near discontinuities, e.g., shocks, and introduce minimal dispersive and diffu...
